Save from your laptop to your phone.
Click the Kefli button, press Alt+Shift+S, or right-click a link and choose Save link to Kefli. The article is waiting in your library on your phone. Until the extension is in the stores, it installs by hand: this page walks you through it.
Chrome 116 or later, and Brave, Edge, Vivaldi and Arc · Firefox 121 or laterChrome, Brave and Edge
Until the store listing is live, install the download by hand:
- Unzip the download into a folder you won't delete or move. The browser loads the extension from that folder every time it starts.
- Open
chrome://extensions. In Brave it'sbrave://extensions, in Edgeedge://extensions. - Switch on Developer mode, at the top right of the page.
- Press Load unpacked and choose the folder you unzipped.
- Open the jigsaw-piece menu in the toolbar and pin Kefli, so its button is always to hand.
The browser may show a banner suggesting you turn off extensions in developer mode. You can dismiss it; it appears for every extension installed this way.
Firefox
The Firefox download is signed by Mozilla, so it installs like any add-on:
- Open the downloaded
.xpifile in Firefox, or drag it onto a Firefox window. - Press Add when Firefox asks.
- Pin Kefli from the extensions menu in the toolbar.
Pair with your phone
The extension sends what you save to your phone, so it needs to know which phone. It never holds your library's key; it gets a key of its own when you pair.
- Click the Kefli button. The first time, it opens its settings page and shows a QR code.
- On your phone, open Kefli, go to You and choose Connect a browser.
- Scan the QR code. The extension says it's paired, and you can start saving.
To unpair, use the extension's settings page, and remove the browser under Connected browsers on your phone as well.
Updates
The Firefox extension updates itself. The Chrome download doesn't: when there's a new version, unzip it over the same folder and press the reload arrow on the Kefli card in chrome://extensions. Your pairing stays in place.
A BETA badge on the Kefli button means you're running a test build. Everything works as normal; it's there so testers can tell builds apart.
What it can access
The extension asks for as little as it can. It reads a page only when you save it, and never your browsing history.
| Permission | Why |
|---|---|
activeTab | Read the page in front of you, only when you click Save, press the shortcut or use the menu. |
scripting | Run the code that captures the article, and show the Saved to Kefli message on the page. |
storage | Remember the pairing, and hold saves made while you're offline. |
alarms | Try again later when a save couldn't be sent. |
contextMenus | Add Save link to Kefli to the right-click menu. |
It asks for no access to your tabs, history, cookies, notifications or network traffic, and to no websites in advance. The extension's privacy note sets out what it sends, and where.
